What are equivalent insights and how are they estimated?

Equivalent insights help translate abstract carbon footprint numbers into more relatable and understandable comparisons. For example, in the ‘Equivalent Insights’ tab, we compare your estimated carbon footprint to everyday activities, such as the carbon absorbed by a certain number of trees, or to the emissions produced by driving a petrol car.

How do we estimate equivalent insights?

Based on data from One Tree Planted, an average tree absorbs about 10 kg of CO2 per year. We’ll divide your carbon footprint by 10kg, to estimate how many trees are needed to absorb the amount of CO2 your spending habits produce. According to UK Government statistics, the average petrol car emits about 4.775 kg of CO2 per kilometre driven. We’ll divide your carbon footprint by 4.775 kg to estimate how many kilometres you'd need to drive to produce the amount of CO2 emitted by your transactions, estimated with ‘Carbon Footprints’.

We update these references on a yearly basis, to make sure we’re helping you understand the real impacts of your carbon footprint.
